How my time at The University of Salford prepared me for a career in Entertainment Journalism and Content Creation.

Hi! I’m Ben Wilkinson, a 22-year-old Media Production: Journalism graduate. Since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be part of the creative industry when I grew up. I graduated from York St John University with a First Class BA (Hons), and was eager to further my knowledge in another sector. I’m originally from Durham, and wanted to move to Manchester and join Salford University to pursue my further education as I feel the city is a big creative hub, brimming with talent and opportunities that I knew I needed to be a part of.

As a creative who sees their future career being digital, I knew I needed my Digital Video Production and Marketing Masters degree to harness my creative energy, give myself more competitive advantage, and improve my pre-existing skills to make the best creative digital and written content possible. Now that I’ve had the pleasure of attending both Salford Business School and learning in MediaCityUK, I thought it would be a great opportunity to share some of the things I’ve learned.

One thing I always used to struggle with was SEO. As you can imagine, being a journalist, SEO is something you should without a doubt be able to master and use to your advantage. After attending my lectures at Salford Business School as part of the Search and Social Media Marketing module and learning how to fully optimise my content, I feel extremely confident putting my SEO knowledge into practice and finally feel assured I’m an SEO expert. This is a vital skill that will undoubtedly be an asset to me in my journalism career.

I used my newfound SEO skills to help me create two of my new articles, A Definitive Ranking of Charli XCX’s Music Videos and In Discussion With: HEX.

Additionally, as a content creator, the course has taught me some valuable lessons about professionally creating content for brands. Usually, when I’m creating branded content for my own Instagram, I’m given a brief and have to go off and create content on my own, mainly using my phone. During my Masters course, I’ve learnt so many creative ways to enhance my branded content and take it to another level. Whether this be with graphics, video content or shareability, I’ve gained a heap of transferable knowledge and insights that I can apply not only to my professional work, but also to my personal branded content.

I’m so glad I took the leap to move to Manchester and complete this Masters course, I can’t wait to apply everything I’ve learnt at The University of Salford to imminent real-life working scenarios and make the best content I possibly can!
